How to install an eSIM on iPhone and Android: step by step
QR code, manual setup and in-app installation. We cover every method and explain when to switch the eSIM on so you don't lose plan days.
Installing an eSIM takes a couple of minutes, but there are catches: a QR code can usually be scanned only once, and with some providers the plan starts right after installation. So it's best to install the eSIM at home and switch it on after you land.
Before you start
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to a carrier.
- Connect to stable Wi‑Fi — installation needs internet.
- Don't delete the eSIM after installing it: the same profile usually can't be reinstalled.
iPhone
- Open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.
- Choose “Use QR code” and scan the code from the provider's email or app.
- Give the eSIM a clear name, e.g. “Travel”.
- At your destination, select this line for cellular data and turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM.
Android (Samsung, Pixel and others)
- Open Settings → Connections (or Network & internet) → SIM manager.
- Tap “Add eSIM” and scan the QR code.
- After installation, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on roaming.
💡 Tip: Roaming must be enabled for the travel eSIM — it won't cost extra, you only pay for the provider's plan. For your main SIM, though, it's better to keep roaming off.
