eSIM or roaming: which is cheaper in 2026
We work out the cost of a week of data abroad: your home carrier's roaming versus a travel eSIM. Spoiler: the difference can be several times over.
Roaming is convenient: nothing to set up and you keep your number. But outside “home” zones it usually costs noticeably more than a travel eSIM — especially if you need a lot of data.
When an eSIM is better value
- You need more than 1 GB of data on the trip.
- Your carrier has no good-value packs for the destination.
- You need to share data with a laptop or tablet.
When roaming will do
- Calls and texts on your main number matter most, and you need very little data.
- Your carrier offers a good-value pack for that specific country.
💡 Tip: The best option is to combine them: keep your main SIM for calls and texts (with data roaming off) and use a travel eSIM for internet.
